Why grow materials in space?

Microgravity eliminates defects found in Earth-based materials manufacturing. This allows us to produce higher-purity, higher-performance materials for next-generation semiconductors.

Lack of sedimentation means a uniform mixing of precursor gases.
Lack of convection means faster, more efficient heating of substrate as less is transferred away by convection
Ultra high vacuum (10-11 Pa) conditions, primarily consisting of hydrogen, allow for precise control of nitrogen.

Why grow materials in space?

The lack of buoyancy-driven convection inside the growth chamber enables uniform temperature and species distribution that suppresses grain boundary growth.

Microgravity enables production of higher-quality seed crystals.  Higher-quality seed crystals can drive Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) improvements at the device level.

Improved electrical performance and improved device reliability lead to upstream efficiencies and savings.
